JOHN BAMFORD
Been drawing as long as can remember, with strong encouragement from mother who had done a little painting. Used pastels at school and entered work in local (city) competition. Work rejected on grounds that adult help had been provided. In 1946 introduced to water colour at school. Did not enjoy the medium but still possess one or two examples which do not seem too bad for a ten year old. From about the age of fourteen concentrated on drawing, with initial work in pencil followed by pen and ink, later concentrating again on pencil, although did make one attempt again with water colour. Finally having decided to concentrate on oils which proved less easy than hoped, although made moderate progress over the years. Ultimately with reasonable success which has continued sporadically until today..

In general I prefer working outdoors from life. A possible preponderance of submitted work has had to be from photographs, the reason being limited access to the subjects concerned. Any family person will understand!
